Information:

Retaining walls in short are structures that are designed to restrain and soil against a slope that it would not naturally keep to, to prevent it from losing its shape and strength. The are generally built in areas of difficult terrain and areas with slopes, for examples long winding roads would usually have retaining walls running the whole way up.

The tend to be built along roadsides, to create a pathway for the cars to pass through. Every wall supports a wedge of soil pressuring it to keep its shape. One thing that must be considered when planning and installing a retaining wall, is that the wall has proper drainage behind it to limit the amount of pressure placed on the wall and prevent it from falling.
